Honor & Shame culture - by Salman Rushdie

Salman Rushdie
Salman Rushdie
Salman Rushdie, the author of "The Satanic Versus", penned a very good letter to the UK Times about the culture of honor and shame that exists in Pakistan and India. In this culture it is an accepted remedy to restore the honor of a tribe by shaming a women with rape.

It boggles my mind to attempt to comprehend how this could be. But it has been this way for long, long time. Sadly, it will be that way for a long time to come. I can't even express how disgusted I am with Pakistan every time I hear about another "honor" gang-rape.

Mukhtar Mai
Mukhtar Mai
The case of Mukhtar Mai, who was gang raped by a group of men under orders from her tribal council to punish her tribe because her 16 year old brother was seen holding the hand of girl from another tribe. The fact that the Pakistani courts have allowed these men to walk free, and seems to be squirming to find a way to avoid punishing them for what they view as a normal event.
